Sleeping with the Fishes Fred the Mermaid Book 1 MaryJanice Davidson Books
The characters are definitely unique, but I just don't like most of them. Fred, the heroine is a nasty, rude bitch with no likable traits (at least none that I noticed). Her reaction to her parents having sex was just too over the top for an adult, almost 30, especially one raised by a "hippie". It would even be pushing reality for a teenagers reaction. The hunky guys are even kind of blah. I didn't even care when Fred got shot - it was kind of anticlimatic.C'mon MJD you can do much better. I love the Aisling Gray and Queen Betsy stories and have pre ordered the next in both series. I won't buy the next Fred book when it comes out. Will read it if I can borrow it just to see if the characters have improved (I can hope). I know MJD can write well. I've read all of her books - and liked or loved them all. This one was a major disappointment. I gave it 2 stars just for the unique characters.
And the character Frederica Bimmel was the first victim of the serial killer Buffalo Bill in the book "Silence of the Lambs". Everytime I see the name Frederica Bimm, I think of a skinned, dead body. Incredibly distracting!

Sleeping with the Fishes Fred the Mermaid Book 1 MaryJanice Davidson Books Reviews
I love this entire series and wish that it were longer than three books. One question, though. Why is the first book unavailable on kindle?
I feel like I read a different book from all the glowing reviews below. The book was a quick read, but just okay. Like when you eat to fast you're stuck trying to remember what you ate and how it tasted. That's how I feel about this book. A mermaid lead character makes this a paranormal. Different but that's all. The mystery of who is polluting the water around Boston Harbour could have been a great hook to hang the mantle of "mystery/who dunnit" on this book, but it was only half heartedly developed. There really was only rudimentary investigation into learning the identity of the guilty party. The culprit is "discovered" during a tryst between two of the secondary characters. Ms. Davidson has a "name" in the vampire gendre and this is ( I think) an attempt by her and her publisher to give her a break from that and segueway into another series with a built in audience to follow. I'm not going to totally write this series off though. I'd buy the second book in this series ("used") to see if she does a better job baiting the hook and reeling in a better story.
First, let me say I like the Undead books that Davidson writes, but Sleeping with the Fishes fell far short in my opinion. The plot is weak, very weak. A localized pollution problem in Boston attracts the attention of Merfolk all the way out in the Black Sea? Weak and not very believable, especially considering the pollution they're fighting isn't confined to just the villain or location in the book--it's a global problem. In fact, Eastern Europe (where the Black Sea is) has much more serious marine ecological problems than the one the book highlights.
There is little description, which I found strange considering this is a mermaid story which entails a very different environment than we're used to. I thought there would be more as Davidson indicates she researched the ocean as preparation for the story, but nope, the story is a lot of dialogue and very little setting. The characters are one dimensional and the romance is contrived-- i.e. guy sees girl and falls in love, there's no romantic build-up. I really dislike when people fall in love just because the author says they're supposed to, it's a cop-out and signals poor character development on the author's part.
The concept was great, the execution was not. The worldbuilding needed to be much more detailed for this novel to work for me and the characters needed to be three dimensional for me to buy into the romance. I won't be buying the sequel.
Frederika Bimm (Fred to her friends and family) has a secret that helps her in her job at the New England Aquarium - she's a mermaid. For obvious reasons, Fred keeps her secret closely guarded and outside of her family, only her best friend Jonas knows the truth about her. But Fred's secret is unraveling - marine biologist Thomas Pearson sees her swimming as a mermaid and Artur, High Prince of the Black Sea, has come looking for her because someone is polluting the water in Boston Harbor and the pollution is harming the merpeople. While Fred, Thomas and Artur work together to find out who is causing the pollution, Thomas and Artur begin vying for Fred's affection. While Fred is trying to decide which guy she likes more, her friend Joshua is attracted to Fred's boss, Dr. Barb, but he faces two obstacles she's much older than he is and she thinks he's gay.
"Sleeping with the Fishes" is an amusing fantasy romance. I loved the idea of a mermaid as a heroine and Fred is indeed a unique heroine. She's beautiful, smart, and more than a little impatient. She has a lot of funny quirks for a mermaid she can't swim with her legs, only her tail which is a problem since her job involves her being in the water; she's allergic to seafood; and she gets seasick while on a boat. There are other great characters in the book; I especially liked Joshua, who may be the gayest straight character in fiction (he's very very secure in his sexuality). Joshua, in fact, has some of the funniest and sexiest scenes in the book. There's a lot of humor in the book - Fred's mother's name is Moon Bimm and Fred has a few funny conversations with fish that are on a hunger strike because she won't play any music by the Pet Shop Boys. However, I did have a few problems with the book. I found the repeated use of a certain four letter word beginning with the letter "F" to be off-putting. And the book is too open-ended, it's clear there's going to be at least one sequel, but I have to wonder how long the Fred-Thomas-Artur triangle will hold reader's interest.
"Sleeping with the Fishes" was a fun but incomplete read.
This book caught my interest from the first paragraph!! This is a fun and at times silly book about Fred, who is a mermaid with a potty mouth. She is trying to find her way in the human world without giving away her secret. Will she be successful and can a mermaid pretending to be a human find romance or even love?
Can't miss chick lit at it's finest!!
