What I Liked
I first read this book in High School and it's stuck with me for years after as I re-read it. Every time I remember again why I love this book. Atwater-Rhodes creates a great world that feels rich in lore and history but at the same time feels simple and real. I loved that Danica and Zane were willing to do anything for their people, even marry the enemy. They were both so selfless and compassionate that you instantly felt connected to them and wanted to see things work out. This is young adult so their love story is a slow build and perfectly paced for people that are only 17 and 19. The pretend affection Zane shows in front of their people is surprisingly easy for him and Danica, who comes from a more reserved culture, learns how to let loose a bit. Both Zane and Danica are very respectful of the other's cultures while at the same time trying to find ways to bridge the gap. A great read for anyone that likes fantasy with a sweet love story.

Hawksong The Kiesha'ra Volume One Amelia AtwaterRhodes Books Reviews
Ok, the plot is so vivid!
I loved this book right from the start, is not only easy to read but also it keeps drawning you into it!
War has been going on for far too long between Avians and Serpiente, now is finally in the hands of both races leades to end it for good. So Danica, avian shapeshifter and leader of her kind, takes Zane Cobriana, serpiente shapeshifter and king of his kind, as her pair bond. Open war has ended but things are far from easy for this young couple.
For the most part of the Book, Danica struggles trying to understand Zane, she wants to trust him, and that is all Zane asks from her trust. Early on the book, Zane informs Danica that he doesn't love her and that he doubts he ever will but as people try to pull them apart via assessinations attempts he finds out that he was wrong. So does Danica, she in fact can trust Zane, perhaps even more than that.
The myths that populate the those lands are rich and beautiful. It's an amazing book to read.
Can't wait to get my hands in the next volume of this sotry Snakcharm The Kiesha'ra Volume II, told from Zane POV
PS. Did I mention that Zane is one of the sexiest man of fiction?
Although a very easy read, this is one of my favorite fantasy novels. This book starts the Kiesha'ra series, and starts it well.
The Avians and Serpiente have been in war for hundreds of years, so long in fact that neither side know's how and why the war got started. With nothing more to go on than the revenge for their people's deaths, the two new leaders of each side are tired of the endless bloodshed and seek help from a neutral land. Zane, leader of the Serpiente, and Danica, leader of the Avians, are given the proposal that in order to put the two sides at rest, you must start with the middle- tie the two royal families. Outraged at this "insane" idea, the two families and their people quickly put an end to this proposition although Danica and Zane secretly think it's insane enough to just might work. Under the cloak of darkness Danica secretly meets with Zane to make the final arrangements of which is the final desperate attempt to make peace. With the understanding that neither of them could ever love the other, the deal is set. At first their two different upbringings clash, leaving both feeling empty and alone, but as time goes on along with an assassin on the loose, feelings change.
Rhodes does an excellent job of not only describing her characters, but endearing them to us also. The story is fabulously put together, from beginning to end and you wont be able to put it down. For those who love shape shifters fantasy books, you'll love this one.
I've read several teen fantasy books, most of which I returned to the book store in disgust after reading 30 pages, and then skimming through to make sure the writer wasn't having some sort of block when they started. Not this book however, I'll admit that it was short, there could have been more development of the characters pasts and personalities. I think Danica and Zane had a fairly good introduction for the first book, but I feel myself wanting to know a little more about the supporting characters.
Teen fantasy books tend to be more interesting to put it simply. She (Atwater-Rhodes) does not dwell on trying filling in every moment of time in the book. She allows herself to skip days, and sometimes weeks to avoid the story from turning too boring. She keeps the chapters fairly short to allow the reader to put the book down, though I didn't.
The love story was complex (though not original) and slightly predictable, but the characters show a good deal of thier own development (mentally) throughout the book.
Overall, I found the book to be better than Ms. Meyers Quadrillogy and I can't wait to read the next 4 that are in the mail.
Back in middle/high school, I read this book along with books like Hush, Hush by Becca, and these books were the beginning of my paranormal romance crazes. Even to this day, as a graduated college student, I love paranormal romance and I have no shame. Hawksong had a nice mix of slight drama and romance along with paranormal factor (shape-shifting) that leaves you with a pleasant feeling. Its like a light tea that would drink. Hawksong was the stepping stone for me into paranormal romance and when I saw the book was $3 along with prime, I bought it with no second thoughts. I re-read it just recently, and I am still a huge fan. Highly recommend this series to anyone who is interested paranormal romance and would want a small sample of it. Love this series and Amelia's other works are equally fantastic.
